Rating and Review
Shanty Town Netflix is a beautiful series, a very good production with a top notch quality. In fact, it’s one of the few shows from this part of the world that I enjoyed. When I saw RMD at first, I thought, oh! This is another wrong casting, because I wasn’t sure enough if he will be able to deliver some lines in the character’s language, and He did.
The directing, cinematography and writing look top notch. We must commend the whole crew for a well-done job. Kudos.
But, there are some loose ends that wasn’t taken care of properly by the director. Shalewa being a Yoruba lady, and not able to utter a simple Yoruba word through out the duration of the series is a shallow decision the director toyed with. If a star actor cannot speak a native language, must you cast the person for the role? Or maybe, the director could have renamed the character.
The scene where Ini-edo had to take permission from a prison warden before she could get on her undercover assignment is also a stupid decision and error made by the director. She already had every informations from her twin sister, and her files had every other informations too. That scene was in essence, I think.
The Bar scene at episode two where Femi Fernandez met with Shalewa had not corresponding lightings. What was the D.O.P thinking? Even if the gaffer made errors or had some problems with logistics which did affect the not consistent lights, why did the decision maker on that set let it fly?
Lastly, who sent the Jackie voice note? A ghost? We didn’t even see her press the record button talmore of sending a voice note. The writer/director could have come up with something believable. This is 2023 please.
We will rate this series 3.5 out of 5stars. If you will like to see some other reviews, you can check here. Thanks for reading through.
